Enrolling at an online coding bootcamp can be intimidating! Todd Schreiber, Admissions Director of Coding Temple, walks us through their 2-step admissions process, prework, and how to determine which of Coding Temple’s program formats is the best fit for you. Learn which technical skills and soft skills Coding Temple expects from their incoming students, and the kinds of tech jobs (and salaries!) Coding Temple grads are landing today.
The admissions process at Coding Temple is simple.
During the application process, students will speak with our admissions team. We discuss your main goals and the job opportunities you’re looking for. These discussions can last anywhere from just a few minutes to a couple hours. We want to make sure we’ve answered the questions our applicants have so you can feel comfortable moving forward with the process.
How long does the application process take?
It can take as little as a few hours! The online application and the assessment should each only take a few minutes. This means that students could potentially apply for an upcoming cohort that starts in a week and successfully enroll. However, we want to make sure you have ample time to complete the pre-course work we provide. Prework usually takes 6-8 hours to complete, but someone who’s self-taught may finish in less time.
What does the Coding Temple prework cover?
Prework at Coding Temple gets new students familiar with the basics, so they understand these concepts before the bootcamp starts. It helps you understand the lingo and ensure the right programs are downloaded. For example, if your space bar is double-spacing, we don’t want to tie up a couple hours during the actual bootcamp to fix it. You’ll get an understanding of what’s going on when you start the first day of class.
Is there a different application process for students who are using veterans’ benefits or deferred tuition?
Those don’t affect the application process at all — With our admissions team, we can usually process everything in a few hours. For our incoming students using veteran’s benefits, they do have a separate process with different forms, but it doesn't necessarily take longer to enroll at Coding Temple. Veterans Affairs may take more time, but we have an awesome relationship with them so we can process students as quickly as possible. Coding Temple accepts GI Bill, VET TEC, VRRAP, and Chapter 35.
When considering applicants, how selective is Coding Temple?
Coding Temple is more about personal fit, drive to succeed, and goals than having technical skills and someone with a master’s in CS might not feel this is the right path for you. However, it could end up being the path for you in the end. I’d talk to you to find out what their main goals are before moving forward with the enrollment process.
We don’t want that to happen and we usually prepare our students by telling them it might be easy for the first few weeks, but it will start to get harder. It will get more intense, and we’ll be going through a lot more programs, applications, and languages.
There isn’t an ideal applicant for Coding Temple because everyone is different and we completely understand that. We have graduated recent high school graduates, NASA retirees, and everything in between. Drive, passion, and motivation are the most critical factors that we believe are critical to student success. The majority of our students are making a career change, and we help recent high school or college grads get into tech. We are here to help people who may have had a rough upbringing and are looking to launch a successful, steady career in tech. Some of our students may be self-taught, which could mean you may have dabbled in the MySpace world where you could create your own profile.
Recent college grads from our program typically say we have a more hands-on practical and creative approach, whereas a college or university will go through history and theoretical ideas about why and how coding works. We cover a little bit of that, but it’s more or less seeing and creating real workplace environment projects.
What type of applicant is successful in the different program formats (immersive, part-time, self-paced) at Coding Temple?
The curriculum is largely the same across these formats, so it’s up to the student to decide which program format to pursue.
In the full-time program, students are able to spend more time in a classroom environment through Zoom meetings. Our full-time students spend about 8 hours a day in class for a total of 480 hours. It’s typically going to be from 9am to 5pm for a total of 10 weeks. We can go into a lot more detail in the full-time class because we have almost double the amount of class time.
The part-time program typically consists of evening classes, and it runs from 5pm to 9pm for a total of 12 weeks. Students will have 2-3 instructors with 15-17 students per class. We try to keep the ratio around 6-7 students to 1 teacher so you can get a more personalized classroom environment with the opportunity to ask questions. When students can ask questions, they can fix their thought processes and get through the path faster. The part-time program hours cater to students who typically cannot commit to a full-time program due to work commitments.
Our self-paced course is structured a bit differently, but the curriculum is largely the same as our immersive. Self-paced students get an asynchronous learning experience as opposed to having a live instructor. Students still have access to the same resources and support including 1:1 tutoring sessions, grading, student relations, and career support. Our self-paced students have a dedicated team and classmates to contact via Slack for support, which allows for quick and easy communication.
What kinds of soft skills is Coding Temple looking for in applicants?
Logical problem-solving is going to be the most important skill. If someone can't solve basic problems, the bootcamp will be more difficult for them.
It’s important to have time management skills since there’s a lot going on in the bootcamp. Making sure a student stays on top of their assignments and projects will pay for itself when they graduate and find jobs. This skill applies to our incoming intermediate students as well since they usually lack actual certifications.
Students can face imposter syndrome throughout the course so we have workshops to help overcome these feelings. As long as the student has the drive to learn, we can help them reach their career goals.
What is your advice for the complete beginners enrolling at Coding Temple?
Having a little bit of knowledge in coding will help incoming students understand different languages. We put a focus on Python in our curriculum, because it’s easier for students to then branch out to other languages. We’re throwing a bunch of information at you at one time, so it’s best for you to try and retain as much as possible.
Does Coding Temple offer any intro courses or workshops that may be helpful to applicants as they prepare for the bootcamp?
We have a weekly seminar on what coders do on the job. It’s led by our lead instructor and he answers student questions as well as any applicants who join. Our student relations manager and alumni director also hold workshops every other week to help answer questions.
We offer students a free trial week, so they can enroll in the bootcamp and see if it’s what they want. (For self-paced students, we offer a 24 hour trial plus the pre-course work.) This gives students an understanding of the program while also going into actual programming.
At Coding Temple, we are graduating 86.7% of our students and 97% of our grads are landing tech jobs with an average starting salary of $77,510. About 70% of our students come to Coding Temple having no prior tech knowledge or experience. It’s lucrative for them to go through a three month bootcamp and pull off almost $100,000 right after graduating. Many of the tech roles our graduates get are remote or at least hybrid.
