What We Built at Flatiron School: Eva & Saige

We recently attended Flatiron School Access Labs’ Demo Day in Brooklyn, NY to see what their graduates had built in just a few weeks. What’s a Demo Day? It’s a day at the end of a coding bootcamp where students get to showcase their final projects to employers, family, and friends (almost like a science fair for apps). We spoke to two Flatiron School graduates, Eva Leake and Saige Leslie, to learn about their final projects, compare their skills from before and after Flatiron School, and to learn about their new jobs! Eva Leake

Before Flatiron School: Eva majored in psychology and worked as a legal secretary.

Coding experience before Flatiron School: Eva used some code to build part of an application for her psychology major, but it was not comparable to what she can build now.

What She Built: Foodr, a web application that finds the top 15 restaurants near the user, shows their location on Google Maps, the Yelp star rating, and allows the user to search and save favorite restaurants. Eva had always wanted to a more helpful tool than Yelp or Google to find food based on her location.

Technology: Rails API on the back end, Ruby, JavaScript, React frameworks for front end and some semantic UI, plus APIs such as the Geolocation HTML 5 API, Google API, and Yelp API.

Was Flatiron School worth it? “I feel more empowered to search and find what I need and build the things that I need, so I think Flatiron School has been one of the greatest things.”

Job after Flatiron School: Eva accepted a position as a Technical Coaching Fellow at Flatiron School Access Labs.

“I’m very excited to be a part of the Flatiron family. It was an honor to be accepted for this position, and I feel like I can bring a lot to the role. I wanted to join because I believe in Flatiron and what it does and I wanted to give back to the community.”
 

Saige Leslie

Before Flatiron School: Saige studied mechanical engineering but had to drop out of college and worked at Toys R Us.

Coding experience before Flatiron School: Saige messed around with HTML on Tumblr, but was a true beginner!

What Saige Built: RegX, a progressive web application that Saige designed Regx to help other developers (and himself) learn how to use regular expressions. Users can complete challenges of increasing difficulty to reinforce their knowledge, and can access RegX on desktop and mobile.

Technology: JavaScript and React, with Redux for state management

Was Flatiron School worth it? “It was a great experience and I feel like I learned way more than I would have learned by myself.”

Job after Flatiron School: Saige landed a 15-week software developer apprenticeship at 2U!
