With the dismantling of the Department of Education this March, some wonder if this could drive alternative education pathways like coding bootcamps and apprenticeship programs further mainstream. We read reports on the positive outcomes from skills-based hiring and hiring for potential. Find out about new, fully-funded tech training programs in Maine and Hawaii. Plus, learn about the 7 new coding bootcamps that we added to the Course Report directory in March.

Curious about what happened in bootcamps last February? Check out last month’s episode to listen to all the biggest coding bootcamp news from February!

The Impact of Coding Bootcamps

  • With the Trump administration dismantling the Department of Education, Technical.ly‘s Holly Quinn posits if this will mean nontraditional education paths like coding bootcamps and tech apprenticeships will go mainstream. “Community-based programs and non-profits like Zip Code Wilmington have partnerships with hiring companies and good track records — always check their track records — and they’re more than ready for a potential increase of students if federal financial aid is disrupted.”

  • As Illinois builds out its PsiQuantum quantum hub in Chicago’s South Side, a brief from QuantumInsider recommends building an inclusive talent pipeline for technical and manufacturing roles through apprenticeship programs and coding bootcamps. “Illinois has an opportunity to develop a new kind of workforce training program—one that doesn’t just prepare quantum PhDs but also creates opportunities for motivated individuals at all educational levels. Rather than waiting for the quantum industry to organically open its doors, Illinois could take proactive steps to ensure inclusivity. This could look like apprenticeship programs that train technicians for quantum hardware maintenance, microelectronics manufacturing roles that support quantum chip production, coding boot camps for software engineers specializing in quantum algorithms, or entrepreneurial incubators that empower locals to build quantum-adjacent businesses.”

  • The Pie covered how the UK’s official education standards body designated Code Institute as offering “outstanding” digital skills education.

Skills-Based Hiring for Potential

  • HR Dive highlighted a new report from Gartner showing that employers who don’t require workers to show proficiency in all skills before elevating them to new roles are 1.9-times more likely to perform effectively than those hired for skill proficiency.

  • IT Brew spoke with Crystal Morin, a cybersecurity strategist at Sysdig, about the importance of opening the door to skills-based hires with potential in cybersecurity.

  • AI platform Workday released their “Global State of Skills” results showing half of business leaders are concerned about future talent shortages. Many are interested in employing AI tools so skills-based hires can be more successful in their roles.

Bridging the Tech Gap

  • In partnership with Boston-based Resilient Coders, Maine is sponsoring an 18-week coding bootcamp for “racially, ethnically, and linguistically diverse youth” this August. Applicants should be 18-35 years old and will also receive a $500 biweekly stipend during the program.

  • Over in the UK, IT Security Guru reports that over 15 women have graduated from cyberUPLIFT, a cybersecurity training program through TECwomen aimed at increasing women in the cybersecurity & IT field.

Coding Bootcamp Program Changes

  • Concordia Bootcamps in Canada has sunset its bootcamps and pivoted to corporate training

  • FE Week published its findings that HyperionDev charged students for coding bootcamps that were fully covered by the UK government.

1 New Coding Bootcamp

  • The University of Hawaiʻi Maui College is offering a free cybersecurity training program, Hawaiʻi Immersive Workforce, which is funded by a $500,000 U.S. National Security Agency grant. Applications close May 15, 2025!

Jess sat down with full stack developers & Tech Elevator graduates Dj and Shane to talk about the benefits of working remote vs in-office. Dj and Shane have so many great insights for aspiring developers, recent bootcamp grads, and new developers on how to make the most of your work environment, whether that’s in-person at an office or from your home office!

Liz has watched 4Geeks Academy graduates Kelsey Low and Trevor Kortum present their final project multiple times this March – it’s so interesting! Kelsey & Trevor, along with their team, built a model to analyze historical data to predict the likelihood of natural disasters across the U.S. – a project Trevor worked on while sheltering in place during the Los Angeles wildfires!
